Chapter 39

Notes on the G String

Exercises

Exercise 1. Just G and A. Play A with your 2nd finger on the G string (the 3rd string).

Exercise 2. String Indicators. Sometimes in guitar sheet music, you will see a number inside a circle above a note. This is meant to help guide you where you should play the note on the guitar. 1 = the high E string. 2 = the B string. 3 = the G string. In the first measure, you’ll play the notes C and D on the 2nd string. When you get to E, you’ll play those notes on the 1st string until you get to the note D in the third measure. And if you see a small number to the left of a note, that is a fingering suggestion. In the third and fourth measures, play A with your 2nd finger (G string, 2nd fret).

Exercise 3. Arpeggios and Chords. Here are the two chords, C and Am. In the first line, the chords are arpeggiated which means that the chord tones are played separately. On the second line, they are played together. Above each measure is the chord symbol. Notes are never labeled with their letter name. So if you see a lone letter (like “C”), then it is a chord symbol for a major chord. The bare symbol C identifies the chord; the lack of a suffix means major quality. The little “m” in the chord symbol “Am” identifies minor quality.

Exercise 4. The C and Em chords.

Exercise 5. The F and G arpeggios and chords. On the second line, you’ll utilize a “half barre” to help you form the F and G chords. When playing the G chord, use the exact same shape as you did with the F chord but moved up two frets towards your picking hand. For the G chord, barre the D and G notes. The note B can be played on the 4th fret of the G string with the 2nd finger.

Exercise 6. Ode To Joy by Beethoven

Exercise 7. “Au clair de la lune” (literally ’By the Light of the Moon’) is a French folk song of the 18th century. Its composer and lyricist are unknown. Its simple melody is commonly taught to beginners learning an instrument. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Au_clair_de_la_lune

Choose to play either the top line (Gtr. 1) or the bottom line (Gtr. 2). If you have a guitar friend or guitar teacher, have them play with you.

Exercise 8. One octave G Major scale. The F in measure has a “sharp” in front of it which makes it “F sharp”. That note is played on the 2nd fret of the 1st string.
