Chapter 43

Do - Mi - Sol

This chapter begins ear training from the C chord. First, play or strum the guitar cue. Then sing the matching pitch in your own range.

The first three colors are Do, Mi, and Sol. In C, those are C, E, and G, the same three notes inside a C chord.

The sung targets in these exercises are: Do; Sol; Mi; Sol–Mi; Sol–Mi–Sol; and Sol–Mi–Do. Each written example shows the guitar cue first, then the soprano/alto and tenor/bass notes that match it.

Play Do on guitar, then match the same Do pitch by singing it in soprano/alto or tenor/bass range.
Strum a C chord, then sing Do as a whole note in a comfortable vocal range.
Play Sol on guitar, then match the same Sol pitch with the voice.
Strum the C chord, then sing Sol as the 5th of the chord.
Play Mi on guitar, then match the same Mi pitch with the voice.
Strum the C chord, then sing Mi as the 3rd of the chord.
